Boston, Lincolnshire Flood Clean Up Begins - With Pictures

6th December 2013

Boston in Lincolnshire suffered some of the worst flooding last night.  The River  Haven burst its banks at about 7pm on Thursday, flooding nearby streets and properties. Around 600 properties were evacuated and around 200 homes are without power.

Insp Mark Garthwaite, from Lincolnshire Police, said it was thought Boston had seen more flooding than coastal areas because The Wash acts as a funnel where pressure builds up as the waterway gets narrower along the River Haven.

Boston's evacuees have been moved to a rest centre at PGL camp in Caythorpe, which Boston Borough Council say will remian open as long as necessary.

Mayor of Boston Paul Kenny said:   "It's an experience that I hope we don't ever see in Boston again.

"Hopefully we can get people's lives back together in the run up to Christmas."

A volunteer group, The  Clean Up Crew has been set up and is liaising with police.

At 11:45am, Lincolnshire.gov.uk posted the following advice on their webiste...

Lincolnshire Police have confirmed it is now safe for residents affected by the floods to return to their homes, but residents are asked to make contact with a uniformed officer on the street so they can assess safety before you re-enter the property.

If your home has flooded and you have any concerns over the safety of your gas or electricity supplies, please contact your utility company.

The authorities say this evening’s high tide is expected to be lower than this morning’s, but that the threat still remains.

A few moments ago the Lincolnshire Echo reported that Flood affected train services back to normal in Lincolnshire.
