Porpoises Spotted In River Thames After East Coast Floods - Pictures

6th December 2013

After yesterdays severe weather and tides, a pod of  five Porpoises has been spotted in the river Thames.

A spokesman for the Marine Conservation Society said: "It could well be related, either to the tidal movement, or as a response to the particularly rough seas beforehand.

"The outer Thames Estuary would have been relatively sheltered from northerly offshore winds."

Stephen Mowat, a marine conservationist for ZSL said it would not pose a threat to the porpoise that the Thames barrier was closed. “They should be fine, they can find their way up river and go back down again. As soon as they’ve had their fill of fish they will find their way back out.”

Pictures of the Porpoises have been posted on Twitter and other social networks...

More pictures to come as they become available.
