Gale force winds and heavy rain expected Wednesday 18th December.

The Met Office have today issued 3 Yellow weather warnings of gale force winds and rain for Wednesday 18th December.

The first Yellow weather warning, issued at 12:14pm today is for heavy rain affecting Scotland from early morning on the 18th December. The worst affected areas are expected to be Southwest Scotland and the Southern Highlands. The rain will be persistent through the day with the greatest risk of localised flooding during the evening. 25-40mm rainfall is likely quite widely , with over 60mm possible across some upland areas. This warning is valid from 1600 on Wed 18 Dec 2013, until 0600 on Thu 19 Dec 2013.

The second Yellow weather warning, for Northern Ireland, western, central and northern Scotland, is for gale force winds. This warning is valid from 1600 on Wed 18 Dec 2013, until 0600 on Thu 19 Dec 2013. In exposed areas, gusts of 60-70mph are expected, and gusts in excess of 80 mph are also possible in places such as the far north west of Scotland. The wind will lead to large waves with some coastal over-topping possible. There is a real chance of disruption to transport.

The third Yellow weather warning affects South and West Wales, South West England and some southern coastal counties of England on Wednesday evening. The weather warning is in force from 1600 on Wed 18 Dec 2013 to 0600 on Thu 19 Dec 2013. In coastal areas, gusts of 60 - 70mph are possible, and gusts of 50 - 60mph expected widely. The strongest winds will ease by the early hours of Thursday Morning.

These storms are caused by a series of low pressure weather systems making their way across the Atlantic and passing the North West of Scotland. The storms have become know in the Media as Strom Emily, and have the potential to cause some flooding and disruption to travel. There is still some uncertainty about the depth and track of Wednesday's low pressure system.
