The Met office have issued a yellow severe weather warning or rain for Sunday 5th January. Another period of persistent rain and strong winds will move east across the country from early Sunday morning bringing further risk of surface and river flooding. The yellow weather warning is in force for the following areas: Strathclyde, Central, Tayside & Fife, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, Northern Ireland, Wales, South West England, South East England and London.

This comes as the much of the country are already dealing with damage caused by floods over the last couple of weeks. On Christmas eve and Christmas day, heavy rains caused severe local flooding in the south east, with towns such as Guildford and Godalming on the river Wey, Dorking and Leatherhead on the river Mole, and Tonbridge and Maidstone on the river Medway, suffering dangerous floods that in combination with gale force winds, caused damage to homes and businesses, and loss of power supply over Christmas.
Since then there has been very few dry spells, heavy rain has saturated the ground, raised water levels in rivers and lakes and flooded roads and farm land. Then to make matters worse, on On Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th of January a storm surge, further heavy rain and more gale force winds, caused damaging coastal flooding in the south west, severe flooding in parts of Wales, and further less severe flooding in the South East.
The stormy weather expected on Sunday is not good news at all, particularly for parts of the West Midlands, South West England and South East England, where many flood warnings are in force. The ground is so saturated, much of the country is likely to see a great deal of surface flooding on roads,of and river levels will rise further possibly bursting their banks in some areas, causing further danger of flooding.
As I write this, there are 94 flood warnings in place. 45 for the South West, 17 for the South East, 24 for the Midlands, 6 for East Anglia, 1 for the North West, and 1 for Wales. As we move into Sunday, more flood warnings are likely, so it is important to check the Environment Agency website regularly, particularly if you are near a river, or near the coast.

Flooding, and even the possibility of more falling trees could bring disruption to road and train travel, and possible disruption to power supplies.
Driving conditions could become very bad in some areas and surface flooding could leave some routes impassable. Many cars have tried, and failed, to drive through deep flood water in the last couple of weeks. On Saturday the 4th January, the AA were called to over 120 flood related break downs. The advice of the AA is simple not to try driving through flood water, take and alternative route or simply cancel your journey.
Another yellow weather warning from the Met Office warns of the possibility of freezing conditions on Sunday night, and the danger of surface water freezing, making road travel even more dangerous.
Tide levels will still be quite high on Sunday at high tide, and the stormy weather is likely to cause very rough seas. It is advised that people do not take risks trying to take photos or get a close view of the waves at high tide. Several people have put themselves in danger in the last few days, and one man is still missing, having told his family that he is going out to take photos of the weather.
The Yellow weather warning is in force from 9am until 11.55pm on Sunday.
