Monkton Wyld Court has hosted educational courses, conferences and gatherings for adults, children and families for nearly 70 years, first as a boarding school for alternative education, and since 1982 as a Centre for Sustainability Education, Community and Guesthouse. Many visitors return again and again as participants or simply to relax as B&B guests. As well as our popular workshops and family activity weeks, we continue to develop our programme of skills for sustainable living such as permaculture design, eco-building, green technologies, sustainable land use and environmental arts and crafts.
Since its establishment as a Centre for Sustainability Education, The Court has been run and maintained by a busy residential community as well as hard-working team of short-term volunteers. The size of this team is in fluctuation, but usually includes around twelve adult community members and six volunteers. The running of the Court is overseen by a board of Trustees and Monkton Wyld Court is a Registered Charity.
We are located in the hamlet of Monkton Wyld, amidst the rolling hills of Dorset and within walking distance of the stunning Jurassic coast. Our main building is a charming Grade II listed rectory built in 1848 as an early Victorian example of neo-Gothic architecture inspired by Pugin. The house accommodates up to 42 visitors in one- to six-bedded rooms. The communal areas, offering period features and wonderful panoramic views of the countryside, are heated by wood-burning stoves. There is a hall with stage and sprung dance floor, a beautiful sitting room with grand piano, an outdoor area with fire-pit, kitchen and classroom, a small but fully-licensed pub and a shop selling chocolate, wine, postcards, natural toiletries and other essentials. Our eclectic and well-stocked library is also available by arrangement.
Our grounds include terraced lawns, a small wood, an orchard, fields leading down to a stream and an inspiring Victorian walled vegetable garden. Our water comes from our own wells and is processed through our reedbed filtration system. We also use as much solar energy as possible.Monkton Wyld Court offers a unique style of B&B and hostel, full- or half-board accommodation. An assortment of twin/double rooms and family rooms with up to six beds overlook our beautiful grounds and the surrounding Dorset hills. We are happy to accommodate single guests, families and larger groups. While there are no en-suite facilities, all rooms are close to toilets, showers and bath. Put your feet up and relax in our Piano Room with wood fire and beautiful bay window view.
Monkton Wyld is located between the historic market towns of Bridport and Axminster, and is close to the seaside resort of Lyme Regis.
