Blood Rain - Sahara Sand Storm Expected To Affect The UK This Weekend 11th / 12th April

10th April 2015
Warning No Longer In Effect
Shara Dust Storm

Sahara storm brings fine sand and dust to parts of the UK.

Just over a year ago, on the 31st of March 2014, red dust, kicked up by Saharan sand storms, travelled 2000 miles on northerly winds and caused air pollution levels to rise severely in the UK. Thousands of homes in the South of the UK, woke to find a fine layer of red dust on their windows and car windscreens.

This weekend, the 11th and 12th of April, the same is expected to happen. Storms in the Sahara have once again whipped up sand into a fine dust, and it's on it's way to us.

Although the problems are likely to be short lived, health officials have issued a warning about the high level of pollution in Britain in the coming days. Adults and children with lung or heart problems, and older people have been advised to avoid strenuous activity. And you may want to hold off on having your car valeted until after the weekend.

The dust could fall as 'Blood Rain', a term used when rain mixes with sand from deserts, overnight into Saturday morning. Many people in the south may wake up on Saturday morning to find their cars, windows and garden furniture, covered in a fine film of red dust.
