The Met Office have issued yellow severe weather warnings of ice, snow and heavy rain for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland on Thursday the 19th and Friday the 20th December. Regions affected are as follows...

Thursday 19th December

Scotland - Most of Scotland is likely to be affected by heavy rain hail and sleet in coastal areas and snow inland. These wintry showers are likely to be more frequent in Argyll, the Trossachs, Western Tayside and Highland. There is also the potential for icy stretches to form on the roads. The weather warning for this area is valid from 6am on Thursday 19th December until 9am Friday 20th December.

Wales - A narrow band of heavy rain is expected to pass over Wales on Thursday afternoon and evening. This has the potential to to snow, particularly on higher ground. As the sky clears in the evening there will be the risk of ice forming on untreated surfaces. The weather warning for Wales is in place from 3pm on Thursday 19th December until 10am Friday the 20th December.

Wales - Further wintry showers are expected in Northern Ireland on Thursday evening into Friday morning. This could lead to icy stretches on untreated road surfaces. Snow accumulations of 2-5cm are possible on higher ground. The weather warning for Wales is in place from 5pm on Thursday 19th December until 9am Friday the 20th December.

These wintry showers are caused by a low pressure system passing North East of the country on Wednesday and Thursday. Wintry showers will clear Friday morning ahead of another low pressure system forming over the Atlantic.
