Amber and Yellow weather warnings in force as Storm Abigail brings high winds to Scotland.

Storm Abigail, a vigorous depression moving north east into Scotland on Thursday night and into Friday morning, is expected to bring gusts of 70 to 80 mph, and possibly as high as 90mph in exposed areas. The strongest winds are expected in the Western Isles on Friday Morning (Friday 13th November).

The MET office has issued an Amber weather warning of wind for regions Highlands and Eileen Siar and Orkney and Shetland. A further, less severe Yellow warning of wind is in force for the rest of Scotaland, where gusts of 60 to 7mph are expected.

Lightning associated with frequent showers will be an additional hazard over northern and western areas.

Scchools will be closed to pupils across Shetland and the Western Isles on Friday the 13th, and the public should be aware of possible disruption to travel and the possibility of large waves over-topping along some coasts. Many ferry services are likely to be cancelled, and busses will be running a limited time table in some areas.
