Leatherhead Flood - December 24th / 25th 2013 - The River Mole Have Burst It's Banks

24th December 2013

Latest: River levels in the Mole and its tributaries have been steadily falling since Christmas Day but still remain high. Between 10 to 20 mm of rainfall is currently expected between midnight and 8 o'clock on Friday morning. This is likely to result in the River Mole overtopping its banks in places during Friday afternoon and into Saturday, which will flood low lying land and roads. Property flooding is not currently expected, but we will continue to monitor the situation and issue any flood warnings if property is threatened.

The river Mole in Surrey  burst it's banks on Monday causing severe flooding in Leatherhead. The environment agency  issued a severe flood warning, meaning that there is imminent danger to life.

Homes in Leatherhead were evacuated with people moved to a local day centre.

The Environment agency described the flood as a 'once in a hundred years' event, and Sir Paul Beresford, Conservative MP for Mole valley said he had not seen anything like this since the the big storm of 1987.

Further rain fell in Leatherhead adding to the problem. Water levels on the River Mole  peaked at around midnight Christmas Eve, but  improved during Christmas day.
