The NSW Heritage Council has placed a permanent conservation order on Carss Cottage and Carss Point and in 1987 the Cottage and Park were recognised by the National Trust `to be protected as a place of beauty’.
William Carss was a Scottish stonemason who came to Australia in 1831 and he is buried in a vault on the property. He originally owned 119 acres and 50 acres are preserved as a public park. (It has a very nice cafe/restaurant in it)
In 1970 Kogarah Council leased the Cottage to Kogarah Historical Society and it was set up as a Museum to collect and preserve photographs, items and records of the district's history. The Museum is open every Sunday from 1pm to 5pm, admission $2.00, 50 cents for children and under school age free but also opens on request during the week for tour groups. These must be booked. Some exhibits change every few months. Currently there is a display on WW1 featuring memorabilia and dossiers and photos of local servicemen and women involved in the war.
