Created during the massive 1886 Mt Tarawera eruption, Waimangu Volcanic Valley is the world’s youngest geothermal eco-system. The eruption extinguished all plant and bird life, blasted Lake Rotomahana to 20 times its size and drowned the renowned Pink and White Terraces.
15 years later Waimangu’s hot springs were established and 30 years later plant life had returned. Today Waimangu is a natural thermal environment within abundant New Zealand forest. Visitors of all ages enjoy up to 8 kilometres of self-guided trails showcasing spectacular geothermal activity and botany.
While all visitors enjoy Waimangu’s walks, the more adventurous also take the Mt Haszard Hiking Trail following part of the original Round Trip that led to the world’s largest geyser ever, the mighty Waimangu Geyser. Blowing to heights of 460 metres the geyser was a magnet for thrill seeking tourists between 1900 – 1904 until it eventually subsided. Nowadays hikers climb the trail high above the valley floor to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding region.
Popular with cruise ship passengers, Waimangu also attracts a new breed of tourists – cyclists. Thermal by Bike is part of the New Zealand Cycle Trail, and an easy ride from downtown Rotorua to Waimangu’s front door. Refreshments at Waimangu’s café and the opportunity to browse a quality gift shop complete a fascinating outing.
