A place where children and pets are welcomed with open arms, Charles and Edmund Inkin's old yellow-painted inn is liked for 'the food and the good, friendly service'. 'The staff treat you like a human being, not a "guest" to make a fuss of.'
The simple bedrooms are 'far from luxurious, but are cosy and warm, and lack nothing'. 'We particularly liked the library of paperbacks in the rooms, the romantic view of the moors (and the cows walking up the road in the morning),' said a visitor this year. Downstairs, 'there is plenty to keep one occupied, newspapers and reading materials' in the bar and a newly created snug. 'There are lovely Cornish beers and gulpable wines.'
Jack Clayton is now the chef. His menu, which can be taken in the bar or the dining room, has 'above-average' dishes like beef rump, parsley risotto, radish, wild mushrooms, shallot. Breakfast has Cornish apple juice, home-baked soda bread as well as a large farmhouse loaf; porridge on request; hog's pudding in the full English.
