This museum is set on one hectare of land next to the Kaipara River. It will take you back in time with three historical buildings which date from 1864 to 1910.
There is the original Helensville Schoolhouse built in 1877 which has displays on the milling and shipping of the region in the 1800's. Hedley house built in 1910 is set up as a victorian cottage and shows how settlers would have lived in the early days of Helensville. The original Courthouse built in 1864 and was used in the first place as the Land Court where Maori came to register their lands. It was still used as a district court until 1979.
There is also Hec's Barn which houses the agricultural and fishing displays and is a fascinating building to wander around, it houses old farm machinery and gigs lovingly restored by our team of volunteers.
There are paved gardens which are planted with specimens popular in the gardens of 1800's. All three main buildings are linked by an elevated walkway for easy access for visitors.
Whether you are going north to Bay of Islands or coming south back to Auckland, take the alternate State Highway 16 route and come visit Helensville. There is plenty to do with excellent cafes in town for that all important coffee and cake.
