Nestled in the historic and picturesque Onetangi Valley, Te Motu is the third oldest winery on Waiheke Island. Established in 1988 with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Syrah planted over 10 acres, the founding Dunleavy family had a vision to produce excellent Bordeaux- style wines using low intervention winemaking practises. The flagship cuvee, Te Motu, is a classic, Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant Bordeaux blend that is still hand-harvested from older low-yielding vines using only the best fruit from that vintage.
Head winemaker and chief viticulturalist John Dunleavy has been fully involved in the operation of the vineyard since first vintage in 1993. John infuses his passion for the grape into every bottle of Te Motu, producing ultra-premium, hand-crafted wines that express the unique terroir of the Onetangi Valley, while offering a new range of single vineyard cuvees alongside a series of varietals under the Dunleavy label.
Showcasing these excellent wines, onsite restaurant The Shed, with Head Chef Bronwen Laight at the helm and a closely-kept island secret, is a 2015 Metro Top 50 restaurant having also been voted Best Rural Restaurant in 2014.
Bronwen works a special kind of magic, drawing on fresh produce from our ever-expanding gardens to produce honest-to-goodness, gutsy and thoroughly modern food, packed full of flavour.
Either seated inside or outside enjoying the Summer sunshine, you will enjoy our uniquely relaxed, modern-rustic atmosphere.
