During the Bombardment of the Hartlepools on 16th December 1914 the Heugh Gun Battery, and it's neighbouring Lighthouse Battery, retuned fire on 3 German naval ships which unleashed over 1000 shells on the town.
The Heugh Battery Museum boasts a comprehensive and unique collection of military and social artefacts from a range conflicts, including many from the local area and some form the battlefields of Europe. We have restored part of the underground magazine area, and have reconstructed part of a World War I trench to try to give visitors some idea of the conditions for soldiers on the front line. Our armoury has a wide range of weapons on display, some of which can be handled by visitors. Guided tours of the museum are available on request.
The Poppy Café provides a welcoming place for a drink and a snack whilst visiting the museum. We also have a picnic area where visitors are welcome to bring their dog.
