We have been here now for 40 years, and David and Linda Carr Taylor are still working (overworking) every day. But their son Alex is now winery manager, having travelled the world and worked in many major vineyards before winning The Vintners Cup as top winemaker.
The vineyard here in Wheel Lane, Westfield, Hastings occupies 40 acres and we pick 30 tonnes of grapes by hand ( in driving rain usually!) every autumn. This will make about 30,000 bottles of hand-made wine. We make 3 Sparkling, 4 Still and 6 Fruit Wines for the UK market. Plus we make fortified fruit wines for export to India as they have been blended specifically to suit hot spicy foods.
Carr Taylor made the first commercial quality Sparkling Rose in the UK and it is still a favourite of The Princess Royal. As one of the first UK vineyards (there are over 300 now) we have supplied our expertise to all the major winemakers and have won hundreds of prizes over the years. Last year alone we have won 3 Bronze Medals in France in International Competitions for each of our three sparkling wines.
The Carr Taylor Vineyard is open 7 days a week 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We organise guided tours of the vineyard with a tutored wine-tasting for groups (phone to book) . We can take around 50 guests as a maximum. Group tours can be appointed at any time, morning, noon or evening subject to our other commitments.
A typical vineyard tour (without a meal) lasts about an hour and a half and will cover the history of the vineyard, growing methods, the trials of growing grapes in the UK and our winery. Then we have a tutored wine-tasting of five wines but you may try any of the others without charge after. Food may be added by arrangement.
You are welcome to drop in for a wine tasting free of charge during opening hours, or you can walk the vineyard on a self-guided tour for the princely sum of £1.50!
