Set in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Hucking Estate is an enchanting place to visit. It offers wonderful walks, a wide variety of plants and wildlife, remnants of historic woodland features and breath-taking views. The Woodland Trust acquired the estate in 1997 and has since planted trees on almost two thirds of the arable land to create 101 ha of new woodland. This will restore areas of woodland lost to agriculture in the 19th and 20th centuries and produce a more connected landscape for wildlife.
You can follow the Landscape Trail from the car park which is way-marked by posts and highlights features to look out for, or you can choose your own route as the whole estate is open access. If you’re looking for spectacular views, head to the viewpoint on the North Downs escarpment where on a clear day you can see for miles across the Weald.
In spring, look out for our magnificent bluebell trail from the car park, and for other spring flowers such as wood anemone and early purple orchid in the ancient woodland. In summer, listen for the songs of skylark high above the open grassland and song thrush in the trees. Look for yellow archangel and red campion and see how many of the 21 recorded butterfly species you can spot, including the rare purple hairstreak. In autumn, coppicing may be underway along the track edges and in the adjacent woodland, for the benefit of wildlife. The leaves will also be changing colour, with yellow, orange, purple and vivid red on display. In winter or any season, look out for historic features such as woodbanks, the ancient drove road and marl and chalk pits – the latter inhabited by three species of bat – and put them into context with help from onsite interpretation boards. There are also four unusual wooden sculptures waiting to be discovered!
