Unique among windmills, Hough Mill has an adjacent railway room featuring Robert Stephenson's 1832 Leicester and Swannington Railway. Next to the mill is the Gorse Field, site of coal mining for over 800 years with many bell pit depressions and a replica gin pit. Also the Califat Spinney from the time of the Crimean War where the engine house and boiler house walls have been stabilised as part of an ongoing excavation.
