The Pump House Environment Centre was opened in 2004 when when Barbourne Waterworks were removed to create an informal riverside extension to Worcester's beautiful Gheluvelt Park. The remaining Victorian pump house was extensively refurbished to become the Centre, managed by environmental charity the Duckworth Worcestershire Trust. Its aim is to educate and encourage visitors in the many ways of saving the planet.
The building demonstrates sustainable technologies and building materials used in its refurbishment, including solar arrays, wind turbines, ground source energy, sheep’s wool insulation, and rainwater harvesting systems, used to flush the toilets.
Visitors can watch birds in the wildlife garden or through dedicated ‘birdcams’ whilst enjoying locally sourced, organic and Fair Trade goods in the Pump House Eco Cafe. The Eco Shop sells environmentally friendly household and personal cleaning products. There is also a children’s indoor play area and Eco Library.
Seating is available in the gardens.
