They are both centrally situated not far from the Cuillin hills and are ideal as a base for walking, climbing, bicycling and exploring the island. The Old School House stands by itself and was built as such after the education act of 1872.. The large ex-schoolroom with table tennis, darts and old furniture is wonderful for evenings or wet days. A short walk down a fairly steep hill takes you past the Oyster shed (selling all sorts of delicacies not just oysters) and the Talisker distillery to the village of Carbost. This has a small shop, Post Office and pub all of which are excellent.

Allt Dearg (pronounced Jerak) is in a unique and isolated position close to the Cuillins yet is only half a mile from the Sligachan Hotel. It has featured in a number of adverts.
