The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC) is a nonprofit museum, research center, and publisher dedicated to the study and preservation of the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South. The institution was founded in 1966 by General L. Kemper Williams and his wife Leila Hardie Moore Williams—two private collectors of Louisiana materials who wished to keep their collection intact and available to the public for research and exhibition. In its near 50-year history, THNOC’s holdings have grown to more than one million items covering centuries of history.
THNOC operates two campuses in the heart of the French Quarter. Guided tours, galleries featuring rotating exhibitions and permanent displays, and a gift shop are located at the Royal Street campus (533 Royal St.), which consists of seven historic buildings that have been meticulously preserved and restored.
The Williams Research Center (WRC, 410 Chartres St.) houses three centuries of art and artifacts, a reading room for researchers to access these materials, and additional exhibition space. In the fall of 2012, THNOC opened the Perrilliat House adjacent to the WRC. Located on the corner of Chartres and Conti Sts., the lower floor houses the Laura Simon Nelson Galleries for Louisiana Art, and the upper floors provide meeting and work space for staff.
