The Westland Petrel belongs to a family of pelagic seabirds that includes the the Royal Albatross and is the largest burrow-nesting petrel still able to be found nesting on the mainland.
Nestled within lush sub-tropical rainforest our walkway and viewing shelter provide close viewing of the petrels as they come in to land, noisily greet their mates, socialise or enter their burrows to feed their chicks. Binoculars are not necessary.
We offer two tour options, the sunset tour and the sunrise tour. They enable viewing of peak activity when the petrels return to the breeding grounds during the first hour after sunset, or depart back out to sea during the last hour before sunrise.
