With 11 rooms over 3 floors packed with things to see and do , whatever your age , you're sure to find something to appeal to you. The museum is most famous for its display of Piper Bill Millins D-Day bagpipes and tells his incredible story through unique photographs and a rolling video display. The tableau's in Dawlish Museum are regularly updated and depict life past and present in the town and most notably tell the story of the terrible storm of early February,2014, that left the railway line hanging in mid-air and the Southwest Rail Network cut off from the rest of the Uk. Using never seen before footage and photographs from the 'Great Storm' Archive the display covers all aspects of the awful damage caused and the ongoing repairs that were made to re-open the line and repair the seawall defenses.
There's lots for the children to do with a quiz and Swan Trail to follow around the Museum or they can try on one of the many dressing up outfits such as the Victorian Schoolchild or even become one of the 'Orange Army'.There are old toys, dolls and teddy bears to see as well as pictures to colour, brass rubbing and bells to ring among many other things. There are 100's of old photographs of Dawlish and the surrounding area in album form, on the 'Then and Now' boards or on the new Library computer for you to see as well as vintage maps , pictures and photographs.
Some of the many displays also include local pottery and geology , Dawlishs farming and fishing heritage , a Victorian parlour , a recreated 1940's shop and an evacuees room as it may have looked during WWII and much more.
